Yesterday Melbourne had the hottest day recorded since records began in 1854. (46.4 °C - 115.5 °F) With the scorching heat and intense winds, bushfires were bound start. Last night the death toll reached 14. This morning it was 24. Within half an hour it had risen to 45. Tonight, they have confirmed 84 dead and the amount is still rising.
What really makes my blood boil is that some of these fires were deliberately lit. Some arsehole even went and restarted fires which the firefighters had spent all day to put out.
Victoria Police have said that arsonists could be charged with murder, a police spokeswoman stating, "They could be charged with manslaughter or they could be charged with murder." I can't even imagine the type of person that would restart these fires. I hope they understand exactly what their stupidity has cost... So many lives.
I hope they catch these bastards.
I know wikipedia isn't the most reliable of sources but they've got it pretty right so far -->
[link] . We thought the worst was over after our three day heatwave last week which cause some smaller (but still deadly) bushfires. None of us expected this type of devastation.
And it's not just the bushfires Victorians need to worry about. Many homes in suburban Melbourne have also been burnt to the ground. My cousins were lucky not to be one of them although their neighbours 5 houses down were not so lucky. In their suburb of Hampton Park, 8 houses have been burnt and many more damaged. And some son of a bitch who's house was saved by firefighters (unfortunately both the houses on either side of him were not) wants to sue because the firefighters "ruined his fence" whilst trying to get to his property and the properties around him. Would he have preferred that they just let his house and all his belonging burn down? I honestly can't believe how heartless some people can be. I really can't.
